Increased Regulation in Sport

6:30pm 30th March 2017, Aras na Laoi G30

The second session of UCC Sports Law Clinic organised a panel discussion on Increased Regulation in Sport in what proved to be a very interesting and thought-provoking evening. Experts in the fields of law and sport were present at the event as we deliberated on issues such as doping, concussion and the impact of the recent Brexit referendum on Irish sport.

The event was opened by James Leahy, before Aoife Brady introduced the speakers and the chair. Then, Professor Jack Anderson (editor in chief of the International Sports Law Journal) gave his address, setting the informal tone of the evening.

Former Cork City FC footballer and current legal practititioner Neal Horgan opened the debate, beginning with the recent horrific injury that was inflicted on Republic of Ireland soccer captain Seamus Coleman in a recent World Cup Qualifier against Wales, before moving onto the other issues for the night. Professor Anderson, along with the other speakers, Niamh O’Mahony (acting CEO of Supporters Direct Europe) and Rob Heffernan (Olympic bronze medallist and former World Champion race-walker) then provided their various insights into the issues at hand, telling some very refreshing anecdotes along the way.

Then, the debate was open to the floor for them to pose questions to our speakers and to have their input on proceedings. This was followed by a closing speech from Minister for Sport and Tourism, Patrick O’Donovan, who gave an intriguing speech on sport in Ireland today, on gender equality in sport and on the governments efforts to increase our sporting standing internationally. Finally, the discussion was closed by Dr. Sean O’Conaill and by Liam Mullins, who have proved pertinent to the Clinic throughout the year, and all present were invited to a reception in the Aras na Laoi Common Room.

UCC Sports Law Clinic would like to take all who attended, and all who made the event happen, especially our speakers and Dr Sean O’Conaill and Dr Aisling Parkes, without whom the event could never have happened. If you have an issue and would like the help of the Clinic, dont hesitate to contact us.
